A MILLI, A MILLI THE $400 MILLION CLUB
From ONTD
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed over $200 million in its first week. Most box office analysts say that the film is well on pace to pass $400 million domestically - no small feat as only eight other movies have done so in the history of cinema.
What makes Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen so unique is that it would be the first film to reach that mark despite abysmal reviews that encouraged viewers to avoid the film. Sure, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace wasn't critically acclaimed, but it certainly fared far better with critics than Revenge of the Fallen.
According to Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, critics "forget what the goal of the movie was. The goal of the movie was to entertain and have fun." Being entertaining and fun is a good goal for a blockbuster movie to have - it's the same goal that the producers of The Dark Knight and Spiderman had, but they decided to make their movie good on top of it.
Assuming Revenge of the Fallen does become the ninth member of the $400 million club, we thought it would be interesting to compare it to the first eight movies that passed that threshold. The graph above takes into account box office gross, widest theatrical releases, and Rotten Tomatoes rankings.
