Erykah Badu is the Original Lady GaGa - Concert Review: Erykah Badu at Club Nokia
There really isn't anything better on this earth than hearing live music, in my opinion, but when you have an artist who sits at the helm and by sheer artistic magnitude and talent, can electrify a room by appealing to their base musical instincts then what you have is an experience. Until her performance at Club Nokia, I can't say that I have ever seen Ms. Badu live - well aside from clips of her performances on youtube - and man, all I have to say is this woman has been slept on for far too long as she is the original lady Gaga.
Don't get it twisted, Ms. Badu has been incorporating eccentricity into her act for years now, but she has the personality to back it up as with a bare stage and her musical entourage, Ms. Badu's is able to do what few artist can do - bare their soul. And she showed out on Friday, entering the stage with a kimono robe, peacock inspired shades, satin scull cap, and a cool steeze that set the stage for what would be a journey through musical history.
Club Nokia is exactly the kinds of setting that makes witnessing Ms. Badu an absolute joy, intimate, personal, and devoid of "show"bells and whistles. Its clear that when you step into this domain that its music that is the star and Ms. Badu took her place in this universe like the eternal queen she is. Her self confidence is intoxicating, her wordplay mesmorizing as she took the listener through her 12 year anthology of hits that hit your heart and soul like bottle rockets. Your ears are taken on a utopian fantasy ride as Ms. Badu provided remixes to some of her trademark jams and incorporates a bit of hip hop notalgia into her catalogue that had everyone on their feet. For about an hour and a half or so, my soul and feet never stopped moving and I couldn't take my eyes off Ms. Badu who in my opinion is a quintessential musical artist from a time when music was centered around forte.
I can't tell you how good it was to see her. Seeing Ms. Badu was almost like coming home to a place of comfort and joy - where you know your soul will be nourished and your body energized. I feel that one day there will be a resurgence in talent, and a Requiem for the prefabricated pop garbage that is stuffed down our throats on the daily. When this happens, artist like Ms. Badu will set the trends and raise the bar for musical inspiration for they are clued into and respect musical history and therfore will be honored as such. As is stands, I can't wait to see Ms. Badu again and if you get the opportunity, your soul deserves to sit in the presence of musical idealism. My ears are still smiling :)
